Crab!  Glorious Oregon Dungeness Crab!

Now, for those of you come from or are familiar with the great North-West of the United States let me just say, “Congratulations, it’s beautiful.  I’m jealous.”  For those of you not familiar with this great region, who desire to go there, let me enlighten you as to what you might do while visiting.  (Warning! Many of you will want to visit after our little tour.)  

The First Timer’s Guide to Catching Crab

Step One: Choose a nice calm ocean bay, that’s where the crab like to hang out.  The one we chose was Nehalem Bay in Oregon.

Step Two: Obtain a boat and traps (like we did at the Jetty Fishery) and go out into the bay, about 200 feet off the shore.

Step Three: Bait the trap with only the finest butchered, week-old fish carcass.   

Step Four: Toss the trap in the water and let it sink to the bottom.

Step Five: Wait 10-15 minutes (I hate this part.)

Step Six: Pull up the trap and take a gander at all the little critters feasting on your fish.

Step Seven: Filter through the little rascals.  Throw out the females and keep the males.  How can you tell the difference? 

The male crab is on the left with a more narrow shape on its abdominal region, whereas the female is on the right with a more round shape on the abdominal region.

You can only keep the male crab, and they must be a certain size, which leads us to . . .

Step Eight: Measure

Step Ten:  Bring em’ on in and cook em’ yeee haaaa!!!

You may be familiar with the Discovery Channel’s series Deadliest Catch, a personal favorite of mine.  I told my wife that I wanted to go crabbing sometime, just like on the show. . .

Well, since it is so dangerous and I would be away from her for so long, I have faced the fact that I will not be risking my life catching bottom-feeding arachnid-like creatures anytime soon.

Never-the-less, I refused to give up the dream . . . So we compromised.  Maybe it’s not Kind Crab or Snow Crab but it is ________ Crab.  For anyone who can tell me what the type of crab this is that we are catching in these pictures, I will send you a very-much-sought-after, prize.  First one to post the correct answer here wins.
